Whale Watching Sydney

From around May each year, the great annual whale migration begins. Travelling over 16,000 kms from the Antarctic to Australia, these gorgeous mammals are easily visible from Sydney Harbour and further off the coast, drawing huge interest from people of all ages and backgrounds. The absolute best way to see these amazing whales is on a whale watching tour, designed to help you get the most out of your experience.

Humpback Whales in particular are commonly spotted – usually with calves in tow – and these 12 to 16 metre long wonders of nature are extremely active, splashing about in the water, breaching the surface and performing a number of different manoeuvres, either for the fun of it or to teach their young new tricks. Between May and August, the whales are heading north towards the warm Queensland waters to escape the cold, find ample food and give birth to their calves. From mid-August to September, the whales return, heading south again to the Antarctic.

Amazingly, after almost being hunted to extinction in the 40s, the whale population is now booming, with around 11% growth in population each year so there’s no better time to see the whales passing through Sydney!
