Alice Springs Tours
Right in the heart of the geographic centre of Australia, Alice Springs is a town built on ancient land, whose traditional custodians are the Arrernte people, the ancestors of which are known to have been in the area for at least 30,000 years. Alice Springs – known as Mparntwe by the Aboriginal communities and The Alice by many Australians – is a country rich with natural habitats, including mountain ranges, gorges and waterholes.
Built on the often-dry Todd River, The Alice is a predominantly arid environment, surrounded on all sides by desserts. Europeans established themselves in the area in 1872 when constructing a repeater station for the Overland Telegraph Line; however, it was the discovery of gold that saw the township grow. Today, Alice Springs is well appointed, offering several hotels, a convention centre, restaurants, cafes and a wide range of visitor attractions that satisfy the ever-increasing tourist industry.
The Todd Mall is the focal point of the town, housing many art galleries – many of which are focused exclusively on Aboriginal art. Sport is well represented in the area and there are numerous parks and gardens, showcasing arid climate plants unique to the local area. Several renowned events take place in The Alice annually, including the Henley-on-Todd Regatta, the Finke Desert Race and the Camel Cup, all of which bring large numbers of tourists into town.
Alice Springs, which seems to have equal amounts of Aboriginal and European influences, is a fascinating place to visit – don't miss the true heart of Australia's Red Centre.
